At present, I’m working on my debut novel; a speculative dystopian sci-fi adventure featuring a family of four, set in a near-future United States of America, centring around a unique and ubiquitous technology, with political undertones. When the NAURA™ device is compromised, civilian privacy is at risk — it’s up to Eleonora and family to make things right.

About me

I’m Will Irvine,

And at 39 years old, I’ve embarked on the journey of becoming an author. I’ve always been a creative soul — musically talented enough, halfway decent at drawing or painting, and always great with ideas and vision. For most of my life, I chased the dream of working for myself in all manner of trades, while my friends always jokingly nicknamed me “Captain Essay” due to my notoriously lengthy messages and way with words. It took marrying my wife in 2024 to connect the dots: Supporting her at a local authors group and receiving encouragement to give the craft a go, made me realise I should have been writing books all along.

Looking back, the signs were always there:

My First “Book”:

Whether having stories read to me as a child, escaping into comic books, or immersing myself in movies, storytelling has been a central focus throughout my life. It's no surprise then that in my first year of high school, a simple creative writing assignment turned into me telling several short stories about my childhood escapades, complete with a stapled spine, hand drawn front cover, and a childhood photo placed in the centre of the cover.

Character Creation:

I didn't just tell my own "life story" though; I've spent my life building universes in my head, populated by everything from comic book superheroes and video game aliens to professional wrestling alter-egos.

Entering The Ring:

In my teens and early twenties, I was part of pro-wrestling fan communities on web forums. One aspect of this was the wrestling roleplay experience. Amongst others, I roleplayed my own personas and joined writing teams which regularly scripted entire text-based "shows" — often tens of thousands of words in length — for passionate communities of readers.

Finding Love During A Pandemic:

By my thirties, my love for long-form writing had shifted to Discord. During the pandemic, I supported friends through their struggles, providing advice, guidance and wise words, while also sharing my own lived experiences. It was actually these supportive "essays" that sparked the connection between myself and my wife!

The Debut Novel:

Now nearing forty, I'm hard at work crafting my debut novel. What began as a throwaway idea for a movie in my late teens is now evolving into a full-length speculative dystopian sci-fi narrative. It features deeply human characters, immersive locations, a twisting backstory, and an unfolding narrative told from the perspectives of a family of four main characters. I can't wait to share it with you all!

Finding FOrtelling®:

Alongside my novel, I write regular blog posts, articles and features at Fortelling® in a freelance capacity, where I also help with brand strategy, marketing and community management.

I initially discovered the platform while searching for an app to consolidate my chaotic files and ideas into one space. Fortelling® became the go-to place where I could build rich character profiles, explore location details, forge family trees, create vision boards, outline my chapters and map out my timelines.

After getting heavily involved in the community, I bonded with the platform's creator. Now, I'm incredibly proud to be part of the team, helping the platform grow and supporting writers at all stages to reach their potential with the power of Fortelling®.

Welcome:

Whether you're a reader waiting for the next great dystopian adventure, or a fellow writer navigating your own authorship journey, I'm glad you're here. Welcome. Let's build something incredible together!

Concept artwork for the cover of author Will Irvine's upcoming debut speculative dystopian science-fiction novel "Fallout Protocol". The image depicts a young woman with her back turned, facing a destroyed cityscape as she stands atop a mound.

When democracy falls and technology becomes the battlefield, reclaiming the mind requires more than just survival.

In a dystopian near-future where society has collapsed due to an attack on democracy, a militant dictatorship has arisen by abusing a ubiquitous technology: the NAURA™ Implant.

The inventor of the implant, Raymond Maynard, simply wanted a way to preserve human memories forever, but now civilians are under direct influence and control.

Ray, his wife Alexis, their daughter Eleonora, and youngest son, Ethan, discover they must journey across the fractured country. Learning who they can and cannot trust along the way, the family fights to survive, take back the tech, place control in the right hands, give power back to the people, and topple the tyrant behind the fall of society.

Witness the fallout of a new kind of war and confront the perils of relying too much on technology, abusing power, and sacrificing privacy in the modern world.
